Hello, I am Hunter Harris. I am 13 years old and I live on my family’s farm north of Drayton Valley, where we raise purebred, registered Kune Kune pigs, Orpington chickens, Ridley Bronze turkeys, a variety of ducks, and Dexter cattle. This is my first year of 4-H with the Lobstick Beef club, and I’m super excited for the many years to come with them. I bought a black Simmental/Angus steer named Hugh to be my project this year. I bought him after my previous steer, named Buster, sadly died from bloat. When I first bought him he weighed around 750 lbs, but he is gaining weight quickly. He is doing very well on the halter, and I can’t wait to show him, if there even is a show this year. I have had a wonderful time working with him. I have no favourite part of 4-H because I love everything about it. It was so much fun going to the show and sale when I was in the Winfield Beef club, and I’m looking forwards to going to them in the future. It is also nice to be able to talk and chat about cattle, a topic I am very passionate about, with a very large group of people who feel the same way I do. If I had to pick a favourite part, I would have to say it would be working with my steer. I think being able to tame an animal, teach it to lead in a halter, and to be able to form a connection with it, is the greatest experience anyone could ever hope for.
